A moment’s walk from Djemaa el Fna and behind ornate carved doors off rue Sidi Mimoun swarming with carts and bicycles, an inconspicuous door leads to a haven of tranquillity and luxurious style. I am reminded once again that is what makes Marrakech so special.

The 5-star Villa des Orangers was once home to a city Judge and opened in 1999 as a hotel and has been part of the Relais & Châteaux group since 2001. Transformed into a luxury oasis the large central pool, fringed by flawless cream cushioned loungers it is adept at combining earthy simplicity with a generous dose of sensual delights, and the Villa has more than its fair share of the latter. The sweet scent of orange blossom fills the air, a lofty inner courtyard’s only sound is the soft gurgling of a pretty water fountain, and then there’s the spectacular garden. A fragrant mix of palms and fruit trees onto which many of the palatial bedrooms gaze.

The hotel features three swimming pools, one is situated on the rooftop with a picturesque view of the nearby Koutoubia mosque and Atlas Mountains. There are also three lounges with fireplaces that you find yourself reflecting on the adventures of your day. Two dining rooms that are a classic and exotic cuisine of French gastronomy. Included in your stay is breakfast, and lunch daily so we found it hard to go anywhere else.

The rooms are all individual designs, from courtyard suites to a private Riad that has its own swimming pool.

Spacious and elegantly appointed, decorated in a traditional Moroccan style with an African influence, full of ornate plaster work and delicately carved wooden furnishings, as well as modern bathrooms with separate tubs and showers and spa-quality amenities. The suites add an additional measure of space, obviously, as well as the added luxury of private terraces facing the courtyard.

Ultimately its the service and attention to detail that makes this oasis even more that special. Staff have your every need met making you feel like you are the only one there in your own private Riad.

Things we loved:

  • The suites are individually designed and furnished and incredibly large - our shower was a mini Hammam itself
  • Dine in the restaurant followed by a glass a wine and condiments by the fire
  • Lunch is included daily in your rate so head back after the bustle of the market and enjoy a stunning lunch by the pool
  • The Hammam treatment is not to be missed in their Spa located within the Hotel
  • Waking to sound of the prayers from surrounding mosques, it's quite a meditative experience
  • The hotel arrange transfers from airport or train station
