Intimidated was the first feeling driving into Alila Villas Uluwatu; it struck me as I caught a glimpse of the crisp white stone designed entrance that was stylishly minimal but with a futuristic feel; I was about to find myself walking into serene luxury.

Having read numerous travel articles and seen images before arriving my expectations were already high, but the saying is true; 'it has to be seen to believed'. I am not genuinely sure my words and photos do the experience justice. However, I can honestly say from the moment you arrive you will want to turn your phone off and leave the world behind, except for the fact that everywhere you turn there is a 'photo' worthy moment you don't want to forget.

Alila Villas Uluwatu is a cutting-edge resort that was designed by Singapore based architectural firm WOHA, known for innovative design that harmonises with the local climate and ecosystem. I later learned the sleek buildings incorporate indigenous rock and wood, they seamlessly blend into the natural surroundings, while still providing a chic, ultramodern aesthetic.

The thundering ocean below was a soundtrack to my stay, and if you are tempted and romanced by the sea which is the backdrop to the hotel, there are stone steps, all 620 of them, that lead to the beach. However, you are warned it's all uphill getting back.

Alila Villas Uluwatu would have to be one of the most luxurious destinations and certainly makes for honeymoon heaven!

wine & dine

Drinks are served in the Sunset Cabana, which is an overhanging cliff-side platform perfect for sunset viewing. The wood tables, jenga-style wood artwork, and a terrace with uninterrupted ocean views, the Warung Indonesian restaurant features food from the archipelago's various islands. A popular dish is megibung, which is considered the bread and butter of Indonesian cuisine. It consists of fish, chicken, vegetables, Indonesian snacks, and eight to 12 different spicy sambal sauces served on a boatlike platter.

Open-air Cire offers all-day dining, serving comfort Western and Mediterranean food, and à la carte breakfast with a daily changing menu, that may include croque monsieurs, chorizo scrambled eggs, and spectacular pain au chocolats that taste as though they were freshly baked in a Parisian boulangerie.

Quila is a private dining option and an experiential concept with a different nightly menu of 10 surprise courses.

location

On a plateau 100 metres above sea level overlooking the Indian Ocean on Bali's southern shores, Alila Villas Uluwatu couldn't ask for better location but you are a little away from everything else. Which is not a bad thing when you are after romantic seclusion. Most things are a short drive away. Ngurah Rai International Airport in 17km away but traffic can be heavy, so best to allow at least an hour.

villa home

The one-bedroom villa is earthy tones of stone walls, glossy tiles and whitewashed bamboo ceiling, it's airy and immediately you feel home. Two wide entrances lead to double vanities, each stocked with toiletries, with two showers, one indoor and the other being an outdoor shower which I love! There is a separate bath and an open walk-past wardrobe. The king-size bed is matched by a day bed that opens to the private pool and sheltered cabana set in a frangipani garden. There are three levels of service available; from private (do not disturb), discreet, to full butler service. As the villas are scattered throughout the property I appreciate the golf buggy that takes me back to the pool for cocktails!
