Deborah Selleck Couture shares her new ready-to-wear collection ‘Dreamweaver’ and a little of her world in crafting and designing clients dream gowns for over 22 years.

Born in Rome, Italy, Deborah has an inherent passion and gifted sense of style and luxury that blends fashion with classic elegance. Her craft is grounded in age-old techniques of corsetry and bias cutting, and she has a diverse design aesthetic. It all comes from a passion for creating the perfect fit and flow and her latest collection ‘Dreamweaver’ shares her energy for defining bridal moments and creating gowns that are as unique as the Bride she designs for.

Opening in 1997 she operates her studio in Melbourne’s hip western 'village' of Yarraville where she crafts custom, made to measure gowns that reflect the client’s personality and style. “Every design is lovingly crafted here in Melbourne by a talented team; we use only the highest quality fabrics and trims, imported laces, Swarovski crystals and one of a kind embellishments. These elements are part of what makes the designs genuinely unique.

The Deborah Selleck aesthetic is?

Classical elegance using luxurious fabrics but with an added twist of fun and playfulness!

What was the inspiration behind the ‘Dreamweaver’ collection?

“What if you could dream your dress to life? What if it could be as soft as a feather and as
sparkling as a star-studded night?”

Dreamweaver is about sharing the joy of the journey in creating a bride to be’s dream dress. It is an intentionally fun collection of luxury bridal pieces that inspire playfulness for a bride. Each piece from the collection coordinates with each other to create ensembles. It’s about mixing and matching to discover your unique look. There are transparent tulles and fluid silks and for a dramatic effect volume of tulle that all weave together for a sense of flirty fun in bridal wear.

Each piece constructed with the wearer in mind; stretch fabrications contour the silhouette, and structured corsetry bodices enhance curves. Detailed
to express confident luxury, Feathers, Swarovski crystals and hand beaded laces embellish the body suits and gowns The softest silk satin and organza caress the skin, folding to revealing splits and sparkling sequins engage the light.

What is your point of difference, and how do you go about working with Brides-to-Be?

My desire is to engage the Bride-to-Be in the playful discovery of what makes her truly authentic and beautiful. I listen to her and the vibe of fashion culture.

We offer three primary services; The Bespoke, The Customisation and The Ready To Wear. In the Bespoke process, I offer something truly unique from start to finish. Each design is made to measure and starts with an informal discussion about their dreams and desires for their wedding day. I take into account the wedding location, body shape, the brides innate style and identity and translate it into fabrics, construction techniques and embellishments to create a one of a kind design.

The Customisation process offers the Bride-to-Be the opportunity to adapt elements of our current collection to suit their needs in a made to measure process while adding aspects of their own, such as a sleeve to a bodice, a longer train or a detachable skirt. The Dreamweaver coordinates allow brides the opportunity to create their unique look, mixing individual pieces in playful combinations.

What do you love about working in the industry?

Being a part of the joyful journey in celebrating love through fashion. The greatest satisfaction I derive from my work is seeing brides find their inner beauty. When they stand before their reflection in the mirror, I want them to see a beautiful woman in love.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

Favourite piece of fashion you own?

My feather jacket from Birds of a Feather, it makes me feel like a star.

Favourite spot in Melbourne’s hip western suburb Yarraville?

The Yarraville Village, it’s where neighbours greet one another and frolic to the many cafes in the streets; and catching a film at the beautiful and historic Sun Theatre.

Favourite Flower?

The lotus flower; it rises from the bed of a mussy pond and opens its delicate petals to light as it floats on water.

Music on you playlist?

Parov Stellar and Stephan Pompougnac both DJ/producers of danceable smooth beats.

What do you never leave home without?

My fancy new iPhone. Siri is quite the organiser of my life.

My home town of Rome in July and the rocky shores of Sardinia sailing in my cousin’s yacht in the Mediterranean Sea. A dream come true!

Design mentors that have inspired you?

Versace for his showy Italian sexiness! And Alexander McQueen for his discovery of boundless beauty with savage passion and impeccable craftsmanship.
